Hello my dear readers! Welcome to a new journey that will take us to different discoveries about technology use in ELT context. Upon my first post, the introduction post, I will introduce you to a corpus-based teaching material, specifically COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English).
To begin with, what is corpus and how do we integrate it into our classrooms as a teaching material? A corpus is a systematic collection of authentic materials for linguistic research, used in language teaching to accumulate vocabulary and grammar knowledge, create credible instructional resources, and facilitate autonomy for both instructors and learners.
For the creation of the material, with my group friends Alperen and Abdurrahman, we chose COCA and our teaching subject was the distinction of the verbs "know" and "recognize". We designed four activities via Canva: a warming up activity for measuring learners' prior knowledge, an introductory activity for introducing the use of COCA with clear instructions, an inductive activity for enhancing learners' understanding of the subject, and lastly, two further practice activities.
I believe that the overall design process was quite extraordinary since I have never used any corpus-related platforms before. So, the adaptation was a little hard for me, because of that, I am afraid learners would be confused if they are not introduced to the material properly and clearly. At that point, the instruction stage should go from easy to complex in language classes. Similarly, some learners may be lost in all the different options the platform offers. Conclusively, such an authentic platform can definitely be useful for language learning; however, it should be in line with the course subject and be arranged carefully.
